Spencer Smith Memorial Tournament
Spencer Smith was an integral member of the Springfield Polo Club for over 30 years. During this time, along with being an avid and enthusiastic playing member always willing to talk about polo, he served as an executive member, USPA club delegate, field manager, and club chukkers and tournament coordinator for the SPC. He and his family established the Rocking S Polo School in 2017 to promote the club, support new players and help grow the club membership.
In the early 1990s Spencer rallied other members to bring in Springfield’s first professional player to raise the level of play and advance the skills of the members. This introduction of pros spurred the club’s development towards bigger and better times, with more pros following shortly after. He also encouraged travelling to other polo clubs across the Canadian prairies and upper United States to help develop relationships, encouraging reciprocal travel for tournaments. Horses and polo were his true passion in life, and nothing brought him greater joy than playing polo as a family alongside his children and wife.
The Spencer Smith Memorial Tournament was established in 2019 after Spencer lost his brief battle with cancer in September 2018. Spencer’s joy and enthusiasm for the sport of polo carries on in our annual, international tournament held on the last weekend of August. Teams from Canada and the United States, and professional players from Mexico, Argentina, and other countries come together for a fun, action-packed weekend of polo and camaraderie.
